Understanding the
outcomes of SDA
We are investigating the experiences, outcomes and economic impact of people with disability moving into NDIS funded specialist disability accommodation (SDA). By using the Home and Living Outcome Framework, we are collecting evidence that will ultimately benefit people with disability by fostering innovative practice in housing and support.
What is the Framework?
Emeritus Professor Jacinta Douglas (Chief Investigator, La Trobe University) explains the Home and Living Outcome Framework’s importance in evaluating the outcomes that people with disability experience after moving into SDA.
Outcome indicators
Up to 36,000 people will be eligible for SDA payments in the next 20 years. Despite this demand, we don’t know much about the impact that SDA has on the lives of tenants.
Without knowing what works and what doesn’t, there’s a risk that Australia will develop SDA that aren’t fit for purpose.
The Framework fills an urgent need by using valid, reliable, and tested outcome measures to understand life domains. Outcomes are measured across these indicators:
Wellbeing
Paid support needs
Health
Community integration
Subjective lived experience
The research methods and measures
The project is mixed-methods, collecting both quantitative and qualitative data through in-depth interviews to better understand tenant experiences in SDA.
Results
The Framework will produce rich data to inform the whole SDA sector. This includes impact investors, housing and support providers, policy makers, and people with disability.
Our partners
The Home and Living Outcome Framework is funded by an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant (ref: LP220100293).
In order to produce evidence that is relevant to the practical needs of the SDA market, the project relies on extensive partnerships, including Grant and Community partner organisations.
